Atlanta

The Atlanta shooting hit me really hard. Hyun Jung Grant, raised her two sons not far from where I grew up. My heart is still broken.

We cannot discuss the massacre without talking about the intersection of anti-Asian racism and misogyny, and the fetishization and continued dehumanization of Asian women in our society. It is not a compliment when we are told, “They like Asians.” It is not funny when harmful stereotypes that sexualize our Asian sisters make their way into comedies like “Mean Girls” and lead to the silencing of young Asian women who report sexual assault and harassment. These acts of violence against Asian women are nothing new, they have imperialist roots and these sentiments run deep.
